The Volunteer

For Prim The Sacrifice Katniss volunteers without hesitation. She cannot bear the thought of Prim in the arena. Her love for Prim is the purest emotion she has. She will do anything to protect her. The Fear Katniss fears for Prim's safety if she dies. She makes her mother promise to take care of Prim. She also asks Gale and the baker to help. Her thoughts are always with Prim. The Motivation Throughout the Games, Katniss thinks of Prim. She wants to win so she can go home to her. Prim is her reason for living. The sisterly bond is the emotional core of the story.

The Promise

Keeping the Promise The Vow Katniss promises Prim she will try to win. She keeps that vow even when she wants to give up. The thought of Prim's face on the screen motivates her to keep fighting. The Guilt Katniss feels guilty for putting Prim through the pain of watching her. She tries to appear strong for the cameras. She knows Prim is watching from school. The Return When Katniss wins, she is eager to return to Prim. But the victory is tainted by the Capitol's threat. The sisterly bond is tested by the trauma of the Games. But it remains unbroken.
